The Art of the Trade and Importance of Perspective - A Podcast
We often worry about shifts and new phases of life because we measure the experience by what we gained or lost.
Something ended? You lost it.
An opportunity passed? You missed out.
A plan changed? Something went wrong.
I was recently reminded by Spirit of another way of looking at these experiences: what if it wasn’t a loss? What if it was a trade?
Life changes. Moving jobs, homes, traveling, changing relationships, entering new seasons…all of these shifts come with an exchange. There are things we leave behind, things we bring with us, and things we make room for.
And the more grounded we are in our habits and practices before a change happens, the less we have to figure out all at once when we enter a new phase.
Think about New Year's resolutions. If you wait until January to start building the habits you want for the year, you're starting from scratch, trying to start something completely new while also trying to navigate a new year of experiences. But when a practice is already part of your life, you get to bring it with you. You're not starting from scratch and have a foundation to rely on. Free to adjust and shape it to fit your new phase or season of life.
The same is true when we move, change jobs, travel, enter a new relationship, or step into a completely different phase.
Our circumstances may change, but our practices can travel with us.
In this new podcast episode, I’m fresh off a session, lit up and processing this reminder from Spirit about the difference between a loss and a trade, and how changing the way we perceive an experience can change the way we move through it.
We don’t always get to choose what changes, but we can choose what we carry with us.
