Separation is not Erasure

The Craziest Dream

I had a dream recently that left me unsettled. The kind of dream that follows you after you wake up and makes you think “yeah I don’t want to sleep again”.

I could remember an image, a single one that played on repeat. I know there was more but what I could remember was a sliver of the dream. Just a blip. But the feeling was strong. Even when shifting in and out consciousness, the feeling followed me.

It was consuming. Pure loneliness and dread. Feeling really unsettled. It was as if everything in me was trying to get away from the discomfort. Nothing was working.

I was however lucid enough to try to talk myself out of fear. I tried hard to remind myself to be calm. To remember it was just a dream.

I remember reaching out for help in my mind, and that's when I heard, "Separation is an illusion."spoken clearly in a deep masculine but unknown voice.

Immediately I felt all of my fear and loneliness dissipate.

I wasn’t alone, I wasn’t separated.

It was like something clicked into place. No longer was I just out there floating in unknown space and time.

When I woke up, I held on to the dream and the visual so they wouldn't fade away.

The Idea That Wouldn’t Leave Me Alone

A few days earlier, I'd been wrestling with an idea that kept showing up in little ways.

One of those moments was when I read a perspective on cord cutting from someone I usually agree with. This time, something just didn’t sit right. My gut was putting up red flags, my body going, mmm nah. Enough to send me into reflection for days.

This person’s perspective was: because separation is an illusion, cord cutting is ultimately unnecessary, even violent, because we are all connected and nothing can truly be separated. To cord cut was to cut something sacred.

I’m open to hearing different perspectives but this one didn’t sit well with me.

That's why the words in my dream stood out and repeated in my mind for days.

I didn't experience them as confirmation that cord cutting is wrong. I experienced them as an invitation to understand the idea of separation more deeply. To get curious.

The Meaning of Cord Cutting

I personally don't perform cord cuttings the way this person explained them.

I’ve never experienced it that way she shared and honestly I was actually shocked to hear how she would do them in the beginning before changing her mind and not practicing them at all. I just assumed that most people approached them the way I did.

For me personally, a cord cutting is done when I have found understanding, clarity, and see my role in whatever situation I'm facing. It's completed after I work through things, not as a first step or as an act of bypassing an experience or avoiding a sacred lesson.

I believe that even after a cord is cut, I am still able to learn. If everything is connected to the whole, I have endless opportunities to visit the connection in my Akashic Records or memory. I don't need to remain connected by a cord in a way that siphons off my energy or continues to cause harm.

Their opinion was that boundaries were sufficient and a cord cutting was unnecessary. Cruel even.

Isn’t a cord cutting a form of a boundary?

In my experience, this is where connection and attachment become two different things.

In one small part, cord cutting is an act of claiming your energy back. It's respectfully removing yourself from an energetic exchange and saying,

"I don't consent to this exchange anymore. I don’t allow you to shake my foundation or my confidence in myself. It is firm and I am strong. I can continue learning my lessons without remaining entangled in this way."

By completing a cord cutting, I understand that I am not saying this person, place, or event is erased from my soul's memory or experience. It doesn't send them to the opposite ends of the earth to be forgotten and it doesn’t mean I never have to think about them again.

I can simply move forward with my power and focus undiluted. It's a way of clearing the sludge that lingers after I've realized the sludge was never mine to carry.

To me, releasing an energetic attachment through cord cutting is not the same thing as denying sacred connection.

If separation is truly an illusion, then cutting a cord doesn't suddenly erase a relationship. It simply changes its flavor.

The connection remains. In the cosmic web, the Akashic Records, the soul memory.

The exchange changes. The dynamic shifts.

To me, a cord isn't the relationship itself. It's an energetic exchange that exists within the relationship. They can be loving and nourishing. For example, I have connections with my best friend, with my man, and with my animals.

Others form through trauma, unhealthy attachment, resentment, obligation, or through the desire to possess, manipulate, or control. Some experience these kinds in karmic relationships.

We remain connected through many ways. Cords being one method. We are connected through the cosmic web, our memories, shared experiences, soul contracts, as soul family, and whatever larger mystery binds us together, but connection doesn't require unhealthy energetic entanglement.

To me, cord cutting can be an act of love. I’ve witnessed cords released in this way. Like, “I release my grasp on you because I see how we harm each other and I take responsibility for my side of it.”

It does not make me separate from the whole. I certainly don't experience severed cords flapping around untethered in the abyss lacking connection.

Rather, the cords are unrooted (often because they are affecting the physical body), the affected area is healed, cords are returned to Source or back to the sender, grounded in the Earth, transmuted through love, or tended to however guidance calls for in that particular experience.

Sometimes that guidance even comes from my trusted dragons. If they're helping remove a cord and decide it's best transmuted by them consuming it, then it’s snack time. They don’t act out of aggression, they're restoring balance according to their own sacred knowledge. Allowing for the holy fires inside them to purify and transmute.

Like any spiritual practice, it can become harmful if it's fueled by anger, revenge, or the desire to dole out your own karma. Intention matters. That's why I believe cord cutting should be approached thoughtfully, with neutrality, guidance, discernment, and care.

The Dream Meaning

Looking back, I think my dream was answering something deeper.

Reminding me that we can remain connected without remaining entangled.

A few days after I had my dream, I realized the imagery looked strikingly similar to how the fourth dimension was depicted in the movie Interstellar. Specifically at the end. If you haven't seen it, spoilers!. Though it's been out forever, so sorry not sorry.

At the end, the main character falls into a black hole. Instead of doing what black holes do, he finds himself inside a four-dimensional construct, a physical manifestation of something infinite where time can be experienced all at once.

I looked up a few scenes from the movie and was shocked by how closely they resembled what I'd seen. I was They weren't identical, but they were the closest I could find.

In my dream, I wasn't standing on solid ground. I was suspended within an immense, multidimensional space that seemed to stretch infinitely in every direction. There was no clear horizon, no obvious beginning or end. I wasn't falling, exactly. I was simply floating there.

The structures in my dream were not rigid beams of light but more and sharp edges, in my dream they felt more tubular and smooth, almost soft and spongy in nature.

I was floating in an in-between space, much like the main character in those scenes.

What stayed with me wasn't really the design of the 4D but the feeling.

The unsettling sensation of being suspended in an infinite place where I believed I was completely alone.

Until I heard those words.

"Separation is an illusion."

In an instant, the loneliness dissolved and I was calm.

Nothing around me had changed, but my relationship with it had.

I still floated in the same space, surrounded by the same formation. I wasn't removed from the experience but reminded that I wasn't separate and I wasn’t alone.

It was like I heard deeply within my being, “You are not alone. You are still connected, even here."

Separation Is Not Erasure

That's the lesson I've continued to sit with.

And gosh I could change my mind in the future. I might have a new perspective than I do now but this resonates. This feels right.

Separation is an illusion, but I don’t believe we have to accept harmful exchanges to remain connected.

Releasing an unhealthy energetic exchange isn't denying love. Sometimes it's the most loving thing we can do, for ourselves and for the other person. It creates space for peace, acceptance, and whatever comes next.

To me, that's what intentional cord cutting has always been. Not an act of rejection. Not an attempt to erase someone from my life. It's simply a way of saying, "I trust that what needed to be shared between us has been shared, and I can now carry my own energy forward with clarity."

Separation is not erasure. It’s remembering that every relationship, every experience, and every season of connection has its purpose. Some are meant to remain. Some are meant to evolve. Releasing an attachment doesn't erase what was experienced, it simply honors the sacred purpose it served.

Have you ever intentionally cut a cord? What was that experience like for you? Or did this change the way you think about the practice? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
